According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2011 Freightliner B2 bus was traveling north on First St and attempted to make a left turn onto State Road 80. The bus stopped in the paved median, but a portion of its rear remained in the eastbound lane. A 2019 Nissan Titan traveling east on State Road 80 then struck the rear-left side of the bus.
Seven adult passengers aboard the bus were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. The 31-year-old bus driver from Arcadia was not hurt. The 64-year-old pickup driver from Lehigh Acres was also taken to a hospital after being injured.
Traffic disruptions lasted through the morning, though all lanes had reopened by around 9:30 a.m. Identities of the people involved were not released.
Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances that led to the crash. We send our best wishes to those receiving treatment and hope for their full recovery.
Why Median and Turning Maneuvers Can Increase Crash Risks
Intersections and highway access points often require drivers to make turns while monitoring traffic approaching from multiple directions. When a large vehicle enters or crosses a travel lane, even partially, drivers in approaching traffic may have limited time to react.
Commercial buses and other large vehicles can create visibility challenges because of their size and length. During turning maneuvers, portions of the vehicle may temporarily extend into active lanes, particularly at wide intersections or median crossings. Drivers approaching these areas should remain alert and maintain a safe speed to allow extra time for unexpected roadway conditions.
Factors such as traffic volume, sight distance, roadway design, and vehicle size are commonly reviewed after transportation-related collisions. Examining these elements can help provide a clearer understanding of how a roadway encounter developed and whether any contributing circumstances were present.
