Plainfield Township, MI (May 26, 2026) – A house explosion on Rollaway Dr off 7 Mile Rd in Plainfield Township left at least two people hurt in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 26, just before 4 a.m. A woman was pulled from the debris by a neighbor and is in critical condition at a local hospital, while the neighbor hurt his hands in the process and was treated at the scene by emergency units.
The explosion leveled the house and a car parked in the driveway. A fire burned through what remained of the structure, with responders working to extinguish it. Utility crews also arrived to help make the area safe while the investigation continued.
Deputies indicated a man may also have been inside the home at the time of the blast, but it had not yet been confirmed whether he was in the house or simply away. No additional details about the possible third person had been released as of this report on the accident.
The cause of the explosion has not been determined, and the inquiry into what triggered the blast is actively ongoing. We hope for a full recovery for the woman in critical condition and for the neighbor who came to her aid.
What Are the Most Common Causes of Residential Explosions in Michigan?
Home explosions can result from several sources, with natural gas leaks being among the most frequent. When gas accumulates inside an enclosed space, it can ignite from a spark as small as a light switch being flipped. The resulting blast can be powerful enough to collapse walls and destroy the structure within seconds.
Propane systems, faulty appliances, and chemical storage are other known contributors to residential explosions. In many cases, residents are unaware of a buildup until it is too late. Utility companies play a key part in responding quickly to these events, as shutting off gas and electrical service early helps prevent the fire from spreading and keeps the area safer for emergency personnel working the site.
