EL SOBRANTE, Contra Costa County, Calif., Oct. 23, 2026 — Three vehicles collided Thursday afternoon, October 22, on Appian Way near La Paloma Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. At least one person was reportedly trapped in a vehicle, prompting a request for an ambulance, the agency's incident log shows.
The collision was reported shortly after 12:20 p.m. near 4556 Appian Way, the CHP said. Radio traffic described a gray pickup involved with a blue Mini Cooper, and a dark sedan involved with a white Kia sedan. One caller reported being in the blue Mini and said they were not injured.
Responders said a person was initially stuck inside a gray SUV, and the ambulance request followed shortly after. The CHP later classified the crash as a minor-injury collision involving three vehicles.
The vehicles blocked at least one travel lane for a period while crews worked the scene. Tow trucks were called to remove a Dodge with major front-end damage and the Mini Cooper, which had sustained major rear-end damage. Both vehicles reportedly needed to be towed from the scene.
The collision remains under investigation. We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes crashes involving several vehicles harder to investigate?
Investigators often have to sort out multiple points of impact and determine the order in which vehicles struck one another before assigning any responsibility. That process can take longer when there are more vehicles and more conflicting accounts involved.
What typically causes a chain-reaction crash like this one?
These crashes often start with one vehicle slowing, stopping, or losing control, giving following vehicles little time to react. Traffic volume, road conditions, and following distance all play a role in whether a single incident turns into a multi-vehicle pileup.
How can drivers stay safer in heavy traffic where multi-vehicle crashes happen?
Leaving extra space between vehicles and staying alert to brake lights well ahead, rather than just the car directly in front, gives drivers more time to respond if traffic suddenly slows or stops.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in El Sobrante, California
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, stay inside your car if it's unsafe to exit, especially in an active travel lane, and call 911 right away. Turn on hazard lights if your vehicle can still move safely to the shoulder. Even if you feel fine, seek a medical evaluation soon afterward, since injuries from sudden impacts aren't always obvious right away. Exchange information with other drivers when it's safe to do so, and request a copy of the official report once it's available for insurance and documentation purposes.
