What Are Common Causes of Highway Crashes?
Highway crashes can result from several factors, including following too closely, unsafe lane changes, distracted driving, and excessive speed. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react when conditions change suddenly.
Older drivers may face additional challenges related to vision, hearing, reaction time, or physical mobility. Regular vision checks and allowing more time for decisions can help address some of these concerns.
Drivers can reduce risks by scanning traffic ahead, maintaining a safe following distance, and checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. Avoiding distractions also helps motorists recognize developing hazards sooner.
When traffic slows or stops unexpectedly, gradual braking and increased following distance can give other motorists more time to respond. Staying alert throughout a trip remains one of the simplest ways to reduce roadway risks.
