What Happens When a Vehicle Leaves the Roadway?
Road departure crashes occur when a vehicle travels outside its lane and leaves the paved portion of the roadway. These types of collisions can involve trees, utility poles, guardrails, ditches, or other fixed objects located near traffic lanes.
Such crashes are often associated with severe outcomes because the vehicle may strike solid objects or overturn after leaving the road. Factors that can contribute include excessive speed, driver distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, weather conditions, or sudden steering movements.
Investigators typically review vehicle damage, roadway markings, tire tracks, and other physical evidence to better understand how a road departure occurred. They may also examine the vehicle’s condition and travel path before it left the roadway. Gathering these details helps build a clearer picture of the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
