Norfolk, VA (May 30, 2026) – A motorcyclist was injured Thursday night after a police pursuit ended in a crash inside the Downtown Tunnel in Norfolk. According to the Virginia State Police, a trooper attempted to stop a motorcycle traveling westbound on Interstate 264 near Ballentine Boulevard at approximately 11:35 p.m.
Police said the motorcycle was traveling 127 mph in a posted 55-mph zone when the rider failed to stop, prompting a pursuit. The motorcycle later entered the Downtown Tunnel and struck the rear of a Kia Soul. The rider, identified as 30-year-old Desirae L. Sears, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
No injuries were reported for anyone in the Kia. Charges against Sears were pending as of Saturday.
Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wreck. We hope the injured rider recovers fully.
How Excessive Speed Increases Motorcycle Crash Risks
Motorcycles can accelerate quickly and maneuver through traffic more easily than larger vehicles, but excessive speed significantly reduces the time available to react to changing roadway conditions. At higher speeds, stopping distances increase, and even minor traffic movements can become difficult to avoid.
Rear-end collisions involving motorcycles often result in injuries because riders have limited protection compared to occupants of passenger vehicles. Tunnels can present additional challenges due to confined travel lanes, changing light conditions, and restricted escape routes. Transportation safety studies consistently show that higher speeds increase both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of resulting injuries, particularly for motorcyclists. Drivers and riders alike are encouraged to adjust their speed to roadway conditions and maintain safe following distances.
