Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Survival odds drop sharply as speed increases. A pedestrian struck at lower speeds has a much better chance of surviving than one hit by a vehicle moving at highway speeds, since the force of impact grows fast as speed rises.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur on roads without sidewalks or marked crosswalks, especially where traffic moves at higher speeds and lighting is limited, conditions common on rural and suburban roads like those in Elk Township.
Are pedestrians more likely to be hit at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people walking near or on the roadway, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes nationally happen at night.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately and stay as still as possible until help arrives, even if injuries seem minor at first. Getting checked by a medical professional afterward is important, since some injuries, like internal trauma or concussions, aren't obvious right away.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Elk Township, NJ
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away and wait for police and medical responders. Avoid moving an injured person unless there's immediate danger, since movement can worsen certain injuries.
Even if you feel fine afterward, see a doctor. Adrenaline can mask pain from fractures, head injuries, or internal bleeding for hours or days. Keep records of any treatment you receive and take note of the scene, including weather, lighting, and road conditions, since those details can matter later. If you're a witness, consider giving a statement to police while the details are fresh.
