Frequently Asked Questions
Does the road surface affect motorcycle safety?
Yes. Gravel, uneven pavement, oil slicks, and ramp transitions like the one involved here can cause a rider to lose traction more easily than a car would, especially when braking or leaning through a curve.
What gear helps reduce injury for motorcycle riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a crash, though they cannot prevent one.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes?
Common factors include a driver failing to see a motorcycle before merging or turning, following too closely, speed, and road conditions. Investigators have not yet said what caused this crash.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than other crashes?
Riders have no frame or airbags around them, so a collision can throw them onto the pavement or into another vehicle, as radio traffic suggests happened here.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident in Los Banos, CA
If you're involved in a motorcycle crash, move to a safe location if you're able and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, get checked by medical personnel at the scene, since injuries like road rash, fractures, and internal trauma aren't always obvious right after impact. Get the names and contact information of any other drivers and witnesses, and take photos of the scene, the vehicles involved, and your gear if you can safely do so. Follow up with your own doctor in the days afterward, keep copies of any medical records or repair estimates, and request a copy of the official crash report from the CHP once it's available.
