Why Do Vehicles Veer Off the Road Without an Obvious Cause?
A vehicle can leave its lane for many reasons, including pedal error, a medical event, a mechanical failure, or momentary distraction, and investigators generally consider all of these before settling on an explanation. Without an obvious skid mark or witness account, determining the exact cause can take longer than it might seem.
When a vehicle strikes a building rather than another car, there’s less physical evidence about the moments leading up to the departure from the roadway, since there’s no second vehicle to help establish speed or impact angle through comparison.
Investigators typically review the vehicle itself for mechanical issues, check for any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and interview the driver to help reconstruct what happened. This process can take time, particularly when the initial cause isn’t immediately apparent from the scene alone.
