Chisago City, MN (June 10, 2026) – A 75-year-old Wisconsin woman died on Tuesday evening, June 9, after a head-on crash at Highway 8 and 270th Street in Chisago City.
The collision happened around 8:36 p.m. The report said a 2003 Ford Ranger was traveling east on Highway 8 when it crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane.
The Ford then collided head-on with a westbound 2012 Nissan Murano. Both vehicles had airbag deployment after the crash.
The Ford driver was identified as Rebecca Mae Freedom of Saint Croix Falls, Wisconsin. She was fatally hurt in the wreck.
The Nissan driver was identified as 65-year-old Jane Ogbonne Martins of Eagan. She was listed with life-threatening injuries.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not suspected for either driver. The roadway was listed as dry at the time of the accident.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review. We extend our sincere condolences to Freedom’s family and loved ones, and we hope Martins receives critical care and support.
Center-Line Crossings Create Severe Head-on Dangers
Head-on crashes are among the most serious types of roadway collisions because the front of each vehicle absorbs direct force. When one vehicle crosses into the opposite lane, the other driver may have very little time to react.
Two-lane highways can leave little room to avoid contact. A center-line crossing may happen quickly, especially when vehicles are moving at highway speeds.
Investigators may review lane position, travel direction, vehicle damage, road markings, lighting, and witness statements to understand the sequence of events. Seat belt use, airbag deployment, and road surface details may also be included in the review. In fatal crashes, these facts help explain how the vehicles came together and why the outcome was so serious.
