Ewing, NE (January 4, 2026) – A tragic rollover crash in Holt County on Friday night claimed the lives of a 34-year-old Minnesota man and a 5-year-old boy. The collision occurred around 9:18 p.m. on 508 Avenue, approximately 2.5 miles south of Ewing, where icy road conditions contributed to a fatal incident involving a family traveling together.
According to the Holt County Sheriff’s Office, a Ram pickup truck was heading northbound along the winding “S” curves of 508 Ave when the driver lost control on the icy surface. The vehicle veered off the roadway, rolled over, and landed upside down in a pond. The driver, a Minnesota resident, was trapped inside the submerged vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four children, all passengers in the vehicle and also from Minnesota, were able to escape the wreckage. In a desperate attempt to seek help, the children began walking away from the scene. One of them, a 5-year-old boy, was unable to continue and was left behind while the others continued on foot. Eventually, they located a motorist roughly one mile north of the crash site who contacted authorities and assisted in leading responders to the children and the crash scene.
After emergency crews from Ewing Fire and Rescue arrived, it was quickly determined that the 5-year-old boy had not been located. Multiple agencies joined in a coordinated search effort using ATVs, foot patrols, and drones equipped with thermal imaging. Several hours later, volunteers discovered the boy deceased several hundred yards from the roadway.
The other three children were transported to Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital and were reportedly not seriously injured.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims. Our thoughts remain with the children and all those impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.
Rollover Accidents and Winter Road Hazards in Rural Nebraska
Accidents like the devastating crash on 508 Ave in Holt County highlight the increased dangers of winter driving in rural areas. Icy curves, limited visibility, and lack of nearby assistance often make single-vehicle incidents more deadly, especially when they occur far from immediate help.
Rollover crashes, particularly those that end in water or result in vehicle submersion, significantly increase the risk of fatality. These types of accidents can quickly become life-threatening due to vehicle entrapment, exposure to the elements, and the remote nature of rural roads.
Friday’s tragedy also underscores the vulnerability of child passengers and the heroic, heartbreaking efforts families make during emergencies. Despite the quick actions of the surviving children, frigid temperatures and the time it took to locate the crash scene tragically claimed a young life.
For families affected by fatal rural accidents, the emotional toll is compounded by the sudden and traumatic nature of these incidents. Beyond the immediate grief, there are long-lasting questions and challenges, ranging from support for survivors to managing the aftermath of an overwhelming loss.
