Rock Hill, SC (May 20, 2026) – An 18-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday morning after a collision at the intersection of Dave Lyle Boulevard and Mount Gallant Road in Rock Hill. The crash was reported around 7:30 a.m.
The rider, identified as Brayden F. Birmele, was traveling west on Dave Lyle Boulevard and had a green light when a GMC Yukon traveling east turned left in front of him without yielding. Birmele was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident; despite that, he died at the scene.
The driver of the Yukon was cited for failure to yield right-of-way while making a left turn. A specialized traffic reconstruction team responded and launched a full investigation into the wreck.
The inquiry remains ongoing, and additional findings may be released as the reconstruction work continues.
Our deepest condolences go out to Brayden Birmele’s family and to everyone who knew him.
Why Left-Turn Failures to Yield Are So Deadly for Motorcyclists
A left-turn failure to yield is one of the most common causes of fatal motorcycle crashes at intersections. When a driver turns left across oncoming traffic, they must judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles accurately.
Motorcycles are harder to see than larger vehicles and can appear to be farther away than they actually are, a perceptual error that can lead a driver to turn when it is not safe to do so. Even when a rider has the legal right of way and a green light, a turning vehicle cuts directly across their path, leaving little or no time to stop or steer clear.
Because the physical mismatch between a motorcycle and a full-size SUV means the rider absorbs the full force of the collision with far less structural protection.
