Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, since there is little protection for the body on impact. Severity typically depends on vehicle speed and where the person is hit.
What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Driver inattention, failure to yield at crosswalks or intersections, and speeding are frequent factors. Poor visibility and distracted walking can also play a role.
How does vehicle speed affect pedestrian survival?
Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact if a crash does happen, which generally improves a pedestrian's chances of survival and recovery.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, though they can also happen mid-block in areas with heavy foot traffic or limited lighting.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Fall River, Massachusetts
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries, especially to the head or internal organs, aren't obvious right away. If you're a parent or guardian of an injured child, try to get the child's full medical history to responding paramedics or hospital staff as quickly as possible. Take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, note the time and location, and get contact information for any witnesses. Follow up with local police to request a copy of the incident report once it's available, as this can be useful for insurance or medical records later on.
