Frequently Asked Questions
How do head-on crashes typically happen when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic?
Many head-on collisions occur when a driver drifts across a center line or attempts to pass another vehicle without enough room to complete the maneuver safely before oncoming traffic arrives.
Can median barriers reduce the risk of head-on crashes?
Physical barriers that separate opposing lanes of traffic are designed to stop vehicles from crossing into oncoming lanes, and roads with such barriers generally see fewer head-on collisions than undivided highways.
What should a driver do if an oncoming car drifts into their lane?
Safety experts generally recommend slowing down, steering right toward the shoulder, and avoiding sudden swerves into the oncoming lane, since the other driver may correct their path at the same time.
What kinds of injuries are common in head-on crashes?
Head-on collisions frequently cause serious injuries such as fractures, head and chest trauma, and injuries from being thrown against the interior of the vehicle, due to the combined speed of both vehicles at impact.
