Why Rural Road Two-Vehicle Crashes Can Be Severe
Two-vehicle crashes on rural roads often result in serious outcomes due to higher travel speeds and limited reaction time, which means roads like Chincoteague Road in Accomack County, Virginia, may have fewer traffic controls and a greater risk of sudden conflicts between vehicles. In rural parts of Virginia, crash data have shown that although these areas see less traffic overall, a higher share of fatal crashes occurs on rural roadways compared to urban areas.
Head-on and side-impact crashes are more likely in areas without controlled intersections or where visibility is reduced, and as a result, even small delays in braking or steering can lead to severe impacts when vehicles are traveling at moderate to high speeds. This risk can increase along narrow or undivided roads where opposing traffic moves in proximity.
Emergency care response times may also vary in rural regions, depending on distance and access routes, which can influence how quickly injured individuals receive medical attention after a crash occurs. Because of these factors, drivers are encouraged to remain alert, reduce speed when approaching intersections, and avoid distractions on less-traveled roadways where conditions can change quickly.
