Hermosa, SD (July 2, 2026) – An 18-year-old Rapid City man was killed, and four others were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening on South Dakota Highway 40 east of Hermosa.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred at approximately 5:54 p.m. on July 1, near mile marker 52, about two miles east of Hermosa in Custer County.

Preliminary information indicates the 18-year-old was driving a 2019 Toyota Camry westbound when the vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane. A 2021 Ford Explorer traveling eastbound attempted to avoid the oncoming Camry, but the two vehicles collided.

The Camry driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity pending notification of family members.

The 34-year-old woman driving the Ford Explorer suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Rapid City. Three passengers in the SUV, a 35-year-old woman, a 7-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy, all from Hermosa, were treated for minor injuries.

South Dakota Highway 40 was closed for approximately one hour following the crash as emergency crews responded and investigators processed the scene. The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision, and all information released remains preliminary.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life and wish the injured victims a full and speedy recovery.

Why Cross-Centerline Crashes Have a Severe Aftermath?

Collisions involving a vehicle crossing into the opposing lane of traffic frequently result in serious or fatal injuries because of the combined force of impact between vehicles traveling in opposite directions. Investigators carefully examine skid marks, vehicle damage, debris, and roadway evidence to determine how the crash occurred.

Witness statements, roadway conditions, visibility, and electronic vehicle data may also be reviewed to establish the sequence of events. When one vehicle attempts an evasive maneuver before impact, investigators analyze tire marks and steering inputs to better understand the drivers’ actions in the moments leading up to the collision.

By combining physical evidence, medical findings, and witness accounts, investigators develop an accurate reconstruction of the crash. This process helps provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
