Why Early Morning Freeway Crashes Can Be Severe
Early morning freeway crashes can be especially dangerous because traffic may still be moving at high speeds while visibility is reduced. Drivers may have less time to notice stopped or damaged vehicles ahead. Darkness, fatigue, and changing traffic flow can also affect reaction time.
Multi-vehicle freeway collisions may involve several points of contact before the vehicles come to rest. Medical teams often check for head, chest, spine, and limb trauma after severe freeway contact. When large vehicles are involved, damage can be more serious because of their size and weight. Lane closures may also last longer while crews remove damaged vehicles, clear debris, and make the road safe again. Investigators may later review vehicle positions, damage patterns, lighting, speed, and witness statements to understand how the vehicles came together.
