Philadelphia, PA (August 18, 2026) – A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday night, August 16, at Penrose Avenue and 26th Street in South Philadelphia. The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. near an entrance to the Navy Yard.

A black tow truck was traveling west on Penrose Avenue when it struck the victim. Police determined the truck was a dually tow truck based on tire tracks and other evidence from the scene. The victim was dragged about 100 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The crash occurred near the base of the Platt Bridge, a heavily traveled route for people heading to and from the airport.

The tow truck driver fled west on Penrose Avenue after the collision. Investigators are reviewing video footage to identify the towing company and determine who was driving the truck. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.

What Is Reviewed After a Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash?

Fatal hit-and-run investigations may involve several types of evidence from the roadway and nearby properties. Video footage can help show the vehicle’s direction of travel, its appearance, and the timing of the crash. Investigators may also examine tire marks, vehicle debris, damaged parts, and other physical evidence left behind.

Witness accounts can provide additional details about what happened before and after the collision. Information about a suspected vehicle may also help identify its owner or the company connected to it. In some cases, businesses near the crash site have exterior cameras that capture passing traffic. Vehicle characteristics, including its size, body style, and tire configuration, may also help narrow the search for a specific truck.
