Why Nighttime Pedestrian Crossings Can Be More Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes that happen after dark usually present added risks because visibility is reduced for everyone using the road. Drivers may have less time to notice someone crossing, particularly on highways or roads with limited lighting. Weather, clothing color, vehicle speed, and roadway design can also affect how easily a person can be seen.
Investigations into these types of crashes commonly examine lighting conditions, traffic flow, road markings, and whether pedestrians were using designated crossing points when available. Vehicle position, witness statements, and physical evidence from the roadway may also help establish how the collision occurred. Reviewing these details provides a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding a pedestrian fatality and helps identify ways similar tragedies may be prevented in the future.
