Omaha, NE (June 19, 2026) – A 69-year-old man lost his life, and three others suffered injuries following a three-vehicle crash on W Center Road near 82nd Street in Omaha on Wednesday, June 18.

According to Omaha Police, the collision occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. Investigators reported that Rick Hurner was driving a Toyota RAV4 westbound on W Center Road when his vehicle veered left, crossed the median, and entered the eastbound lanes.

Authorities said the RAV4 then collided with two eastbound vehicles, identified as a Volkswagen SUV and a Lexus sedan. Emergency crews responded and transported Hurner from the scene with CPR in progress. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at CUMC-Bergan Mercy.

Police stated that the driver of the Volkswagen SUV, along with the driver and passenger of the Lexus sedan, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. All were treated following the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances that caused the vehicle to cross the median. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Rick Hurner.

Why Median-Crossing Crashes Have Severe Consequences?

Crashes involving vehicles crossing a median can be especially serious because they often result in impacts with oncoming traffic. When vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, the forces involved are significantly greater than those seen in many other types of traffic accidents.

Investigators reviewing median-crossing collisions typically examine roadway evidence, vehicle conditions, driver medical factors, and witness statements. Physical evidence can help determine how and when a vehicle left its lane and entered opposing traffic.

Other factors commonly reviewed include visibility, roadway design, traffic conditions, and any potential mechanical issues. By analyzing these details, investigators aim to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the collision and identify any contributing factors.
