Why Can Multi-Vehicle Crashes Cause Serious Injuries?
Crashes involving several vehicles can create multiple points of impact. A vehicle struck by another car may then collide with a third vehicle. This can increase the forces experienced by drivers and passengers.
Freeway crashes can also affect traffic well beyond the initial collision. Disabled vehicles may block travel lanes, while emergency crews need space to assist people and clear the roadway. Traffic backups can develop quickly as vehicles approach the scene.
Drivers should slow down when approaching stopped or congested traffic. Leaving extra distance from the vehicle ahead allows more time to react. Motorists should also follow lane closures and temporary traffic directions around crash scenes.
