Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to help keep pedestrians safe near roadways?
Slowing down near intersections and sidewalks, scanning for people before turning, and never driving after drinking all reduce the chance of striking someone on foot.
What injuries are most common when a vehicle strikes a pedestrian?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma, since there is little to absorb the impact of a crash.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Distracted or impaired driving, failure to yield at intersections, and vehicles leaving the roadway after a collision are common factors in pedestrian deaths.
Does vehicle speed change a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which improves a pedestrian's odds of surviving a crash.
