Frequently Asked Questions
How do highways try to prevent wrong-way entries?
Many freeways use lowered "Wrong Way" and "Do Not Enter" signs, reflective pavement markers, and in some areas sensor systems that alert authorities or flash warnings when a vehicle enters against traffic. Not every ramp has these measures, and effectiveness varies by location.
Does alcohol play a role in wrong-way crashes?
Impairment is a factor in many wrong-way crashes nationally, though it is not confirmed in every case. Investigators typically test for impairment as part of a standard crash investigation.
Are wrong-way crashes more common on certain roads?
They tend to happen more frequently on divided highways and freeways with entrance and exit ramps close together, where a confused or impaired driver can turn onto the wrong side without realizing it.
What causes wrong-way crashes?
Common causes include driver impairment, confusion at interchanges, missed or obscured signage, and driving at night or in unfamiliar areas. Investigators usually cannot pinpoint a cause until a crash reconstruction is complete.
What to Do After a Wrong-Way Crash in Houston, TX
