Itasca, TX (July 24, 2026) – A passenger riding in a FedEx truck died, and the driver was critically hurt after the truck was struck by a Union Pacific train on Thursday afternoon, July 23, at a railroad crossing near the intersection of TX-81 and FM 67 in Hill County.

The collision occurred at the railroad crossing, where the train struck the FedEx truck and pushed it down the tracks, according to aerial footage from the scene. Emergency units provided medical care before one occupant was flown to a hospital. The Texas Department of Public Safety said both the driver and passenger were injured.

On Friday, officials confirmed that the passenger, 25-year-old Sheldon Gutierrez-Rangel of Dallas, died from his injuries. The driver, whose identity has not been released, remained in critical condition. A firefighter also received treatment after experiencing a heat-related illness while working at the scene. Road closures were put in place around TX-81 and FM 67 as crews completed their work. The circumstances surrounding the train collision remain under investigation.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Sheldon Gutierrez-Rangel, and we wish the injured driver a full recovery.

Why May Railroad Crossing Collisions Be Especially Dangerous?

Collisions between trains and commercial vehicles result in severe damage because of the tremendous size and momentum of a moving train. Even when a train’s brakes are applied, it could take a mile or more to come to a complete stop, leaving little opportunity to avoid a collision once an obstruction is on the tracks.

Investigators reviewing railroad crossing collisions typically examine crossing signals, roadway markings, train data, vehicle positions, and witness statements. These findings help determine how the collision occurred and whether any mechanical, environmental, or human factors contributed.

Drivers approaching railroad crossings are encouraged to slow down, obey warning devices, and never attempt to cross tracks when a train is approaching. Remaining alert at crossings is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of these serious incidents.
