San Diego, TX (July 24, 2026) – A 36-year-old San Diego man lost his life on Wednesday night, July 23, following a rear-end crash on TX-44 approximately three miles west of San Diego.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Adam Chapa was driving a 2002 GMC 1500 westbound on TX-44 with two male passengers shortly after 8:10 p.m. The pickup had stopped to make a left turn onto County Rd 338 when it was struck from behind by a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. Investigators said the Silverado’s driver, a 50-year-old woman from Freer, was unable to control her speed before the collision.
Chapa and the other people involved were taken to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice for treatment. Chapa later died at 9:40 p.m. His two passengers, ages 36 and 27, were also injured, although their conditions have not been released. The condition of the Silverado driver was not immediately available. Troopers continue to investigate the crash, and no charges have been announced.
