Greenbank, WA (June 26, 2026) – Three firefighters were hurt after a house exploded while crews were working at a residential fire on Wednesday afternoon in the Greenbank community on Whidbey Island.
The explosion happened around 2:45 p.m. on June 24, at a home along S Smugglers Cove Rd near Lagoon Point Rd. Firefighters had arrived after a 911 call reporting a house fire when the residence suddenly exploded.
Two fire chiefs and one firefighter were taken to nearby hospitals, where all three were reported to be in stable condition. Two civilians may also have been hurt, but they went to a hospital on their own before emergency units could evaluate them.
The blast completely destroyed the home where the explosion occurred. A neighboring house caught fire, while another nearby residence was damaged. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by repeated fireworks detonating from the property for about 30 minutes. The identities of those involved had not been released.
Investigators are continuing to examine the cause of the explosion.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we wish those receiving medical care a full recovery.
Why Residential Explosions Can Create Damage Beyond One Property
Residential explosions can affect multiple nearby homes because the blast’s force can send debris, flames, and pressure waves well beyond the original property. Neighboring buildings can catch fire from burning materials or suffer structural damage even if they were not directly involved.
After an explosion, investigators often examine possible fuel sources, electrical systems, stored materials, and burn patterns to determine how the blast occurred. Witness accounts, physical evidence, and damage patterns can help establish the sequence of events. When fires spread to surrounding homes, investigators also review how the flames traveled between structures. These findings help explain the extent of the damage and may contribute to improved safety practices in similar residential settings.
