Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one on freeways?
Freeway collisions commonly stem from factors such as sudden lane changes, following too closely, reduced visibility, or a vehicle stopped or slowed unexpectedly, especially near exit ramps.
Why are speed and freeway crash severity connected?
Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force of impact, which usually results in more serious injuries when a collision occurs.
How does distracted driving increase crash risk?
Taking attention off the road, even briefly, delays a driver's ability to notice hazards like slowing traffic or a stopped vehicle on the shoulder, raising the chance of a collision.
Do road and weather conditions play a role in crashes like this?
Yes. Darkness, wet pavement, or limited lighting near ramps and shoulders can make it harder for drivers to see other vehicles in time to react.
