Kansas City, MO (August 10, 2026) – A high-speed accident on northbound I-435 sent two people to a local hospital on Saturday afternoon, August 8. The incident occurred around 12:52 p.m. at the I-35 split.

A black and green Ford Mustang was traveling north when the driver failed to negotiate a curve on the I-435 ramp, according to investigators. The vehicle left the right side of the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, crossed all northbound lanes, then hit barriers on the left before overturning and rolling several times into the grassy median.

An unbuckled back-seat passenger was ejected and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. That person remains in critical condition. The driver was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is stable, while a front-seat passenger declined treatment.

Investigators initially received a report that a pedestrian had been struck but later determined the person was the ejected passenger. Suspected driver impairment is being examined as a possible factor. Northbound I-435 was closed at the I-35 split for about three hours before reopening. The investigation into the accident remains underway as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the wreck.

Our thoughts are with everyone hurt and their loved ones during the recovery process.

What Information Is Reviewed After a Rollover Accident?

Rollover accidents can involve several factors, including vehicle speed, steering movements, roadway design, tire condition, and seat belt use. Investigators may examine vehicle damage and marks on the pavement to determine how a vehicle moved before overturning.

Seat belts are especially important during rollovers because occupants can be thrown from a vehicle when they are not properly restrained. Ejection can greatly increase the risk of severe or life-threatening harm.

Modern vehicles may also contain systems designed to help maintain stability during sudden steering movements. However, these features cannot prevent every rollover. Safe speeds, proper restraints, and attentive driving can reduce the likelihood of losing control.
