Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 16, 2026) – Seven people, including a child, were injured after a major crash on Friday on Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale involving a cement truck and a taxi near the ramp connecting to I-95 Southbound.

The collision happened when a taxi cab was stopped in the outside lane of the ramp, according to preliminary information. Officials said the front of a cement truck, described as a semi tractor-trailer, struck the rear of the taxi, leading to a violent impact.

Emergency units responded to the scene and found both vehicles heavily damaged. The taxi was left mangled on the side of the ramp, while the cement truck sustained severe damage to its front end. Both vehicles also came to rest against a concrete barrier.

Authorities confirmed that four adults and one child were transported as trauma alerts to nearby hospitals. Two additional adults suffered minor injuries. Officials later confirmed that all seven people were taken to Memorial and Broward General Hospital. Two victims are reported to be in critical condition, though expected to survive. It has not been confirmed whether the child is among those critically injured.

The crash also caused a fuel leak of approximately 25–50 gallons from the tractor cab, prompting a hazardous materials response. The ramp remained closed for several hours before reopening.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

What Investigators Typically Review After a Multi-Vehicle Ramp Collision

After a serious crash on a highway ramp, investigators often focus on vehicle positioning, stopping distance, and lane usage leading up to the impact. Ramps can be high-risk areas due to merging traffic and sudden slowdowns, which may increase the chance of rear-end collisions.

In cases involving commercial trucks, braking distance and load weight are usually reviewed as part of the investigation. These factors can affect how quickly a large vehicle can stop when traffic ahead halts.

Emergency crews also examine roadway damage, barrier impact points, and debris fields to reconstruct the sequence of events. Medical updates and hospital reports are later used to confirm the severity of injury and classify patients in trauma cases.
