Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Fatal outcomes usually involve a combination of exposure (such as a pedestrian or scooter rider not protected by a vehicle body), higher speeds, and limited time for either party to react. Crashes where a vehicle strikes someone outside a car tend to carry higher risk of severe injury.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop or steer away and increase the force of impact. Even modest increases in speed can sharply raise the chance that a crash becomes fatal, especially for anyone not inside a vehicle.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families typically can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency once it's finalized. Many also reach out to the agency's public information office for updates as an investigation continues.
