Peoria, IL (June 5, 2026) – Four people were taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle collision on Friday morning just north of the Interstate 74 bridge on Northeast Adams Street.
The collision occurred at 9:22 a.m. and involved three SUVs traveling through the area near the bridge. One of the vehicles, a Jeep, overturned onto its side, while the two other SUVs sustained heavy damage.
Fire crews used cutting tools to remove a person from the overturned Jeep. That person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Three other people involved were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. The drivers and passengers in the remaining SUVs were able to exit their vehicles without assistance.
Several bystanders and Ameren crews were already helping those involved before fire crews arrived. Traffic was slowed as police squad cars blocked sections of Northeast Adams Street and the bridge crossing.
The Peoria Police Department is reviewing what led to the collision. The inquiry remains ongoing, and more details may be released as they become available. We wish those involved strength as they recover.
What Factors Can Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Collisions on Busy Urban Bridges?
Bridges and nearby intersections often carry steady traffic flow in both directions, which can increase the chance of sudden braking and tight spacing between vehicles. When multiple SUVs or larger vehicles travel in proximity, even small driving errors can lead to chain reactions involving more than one vehicle.
Road design near bridge crossings can also affect how drivers merge, turn, or adjust speed. Changes in elevation, lane shifts, and merging points may require quick decisions, especially during peak travel times.
Driver attention, following distance, and speed control all play a role in reducing risk in these environments. Weather, lighting, and congestion levels may further influence how safely traffic moves through shared corridors.
