Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Require Extensive Emergency Resources
When several vehicles are involved in a roadway collision, emergency personnel must quickly assess multiple drivers and passengers for possible injuries. Even when vehicle damage appears moderate, occupants may require medical evaluation because some injuries are not immediately apparent.
Busy intersections can be especially challenging because traffic from different directions converges in a relatively small space. Turning movements, lane changes, and varying travel speeds can increase the likelihood of more than one vehicle becoming involved.
Following a multi-vehicle crash, investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway evidence, witness accounts, and traffic control devices. Information gathered from the vehicles and those involved can help establish the sequence of events and provide a clearer understanding of how the collision occurred.
