Dothan, AL (June 30, 2026) – Three people, including a 12-year-old driver and a 72-year-old guardian, have been charged following a serious street racing crash that left a 14-year-old critically injured in Dothan.

According to the Dothan Police Department, the collision occurred just before 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, at the intersection of South Lena Street and West Lafayette Street. Investigators said a 2016 Toyota Camry driven by a 12-year-old teenager ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle traveling through the intersection. During the crash, a 14-year-old passenger was ejected from the Camry and suffered life-threatening injuries. The teen was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in North Alabama, where the teen remained in critical condition.

As the investigation continued, officers reviewed surveillance video that allegedly showed the Camry racing through residential streets alongside a 2014 Hyundai Elantra driven by 20-year-old Jadyn Ruth Smith of Daleville. Police said the footage also showed multiple teenage passengers riding while sitting on rear windowsills in both vehicles before the crash. Investigators determined the Camry failed to stop at the intersection before striking the other vehicle, which had the right of way.

Authorities charged the 12-year-old driver with four counts of first-degree assault and placed the teen in the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center. Smith was also charged with four counts of first-degree assault and booked into the Houston County Jail on bonds totaling $120,000. In addition, 72-year-old Brenda Bragg Raines of Dothan was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after investigators alleged she allowed the juvenile to take the vehicle with permission. She was booked into the Houston County Jail on a $6,000 bond.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash. We extend our thoughts to everyone affected and hope the injured teen makes a full recovery.

How Street Racing Investigations Lead to Criminal Charges?

Crashes involving suspected street racing require investigators to gather extensive evidence beyond the collision scene. Surveillance footage, witness statements, vehicle damage, and electronic data can help establish vehicle speeds, driving behavior, and the actions of those involved before the crash occurred.

When multiple people participate in reckless driving that results in serious injuries, investigators may examine whether each driver’s actions contributed to the outcome. Passenger behavior, traffic law violations, and the responsibilities of adults who allowed minors to access vehicles may also be part of the investigation, depending on state law.

As evidence is reviewed, prosecutors determine whether criminal charges are supported by the facts. This process helps ensure that legal decisions are based on documented evidence and the specific circumstances surrounding the incident.
