How Do Mirror Strikes Involving Pedestrians Occur?
Pedestrians walking along roadways can be at risk when vehicles pass too closely. Even if a driver does not fully leave their lane, side mirrors can extend beyond the main body of the vehicle.
On roads without wide shoulders, the space between traffic and pedestrians may be limited. Early morning hours can also affect visibility, depending on lighting and weather conditions.
In these cases, the angle and speed of the vehicle can influence the severity of injuries. Head injuries are a concern when a person is struck above shoulder level by a passing object.
