Franklin Twp, PA (January 2, 2026) – A deadly crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike early New Year’s Day claimed the life of a pedestrian who was assisting with a disabled vehicle. The incident occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on January 1 in the northbound lanes of I-476 near mile marker 76.2 in Franklin Township, Carbon County.

Pennsylvania State Police identified the victim as 32-year-old Luis A. Carlo, an Allentown resident. According to authorities, Carlo had exited his vehicle to assist a tow truck operator with a disabled Mazda Protege on the shoulder. A Dodge Ram tow truck and a witness’s Toyota Camry were also parked behind the vehicle at the time.

While the vehicles were stationary on the shoulder, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 27-year-old Allentown man, swerved from the left lane across traffic and onto the shoulder for unknown reasons, striking Carlo. The force of the impact caused the Jeep to overturn, and Carlo was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:40 a.m. by Carbon County Deputy Coroner Jason Nicholas. The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries, and it was ruled accidental.

Three passengers in the Jeep were also injured. Two women, ages 27 and 31, sustained minor injuries, while a 22-year-old woman suffered suspected serious injuries. The driver of the Jeep was not hurt. Authorities confirmed he will face charges for reckless driving.

The investigation remains ongoing and involves the Pennsylvania State Police, the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, and the Carbon County Coroner’s Office.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Luis A. Carlo during this devastating time. We also extend our thoughts to those injured in the crash and wish them a full recovery.

Pedestrian Fatalities on Pennsylvania Highways

Crashes involving pedestrians on highways, such as the one that occurred on January 1 on I-476, are particularly devastating due to the high speeds and limited protection offered to individuals outside vehicles. In this tragic case, the victim was standing on the shoulder performing a helpful task when a sudden lane departure led to fatal consequences.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension is one of the most heavily traveled roads in the state, especially during holiday travel periods. Though the shoulder is intended as a safety buffer for breakdowns and roadside assistance, pedestrian visibility is limited, and distracted or impaired driving can quickly lead to disaster.

State officials continue to urge drivers to move over when approaching stopped vehicles, reduce speed, and remain alert—especially during nighttime or low-light conditions. These efforts are critical to protecting roadside workers, disabled motorists, and Good Samaritans alike.
