FRESNO, Fresno County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A pickup truck and a big rig hauling double trailers collided on westbound West Shaw Avenue at North Maroa Avenue on Thursday morning, October 29, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported shortly after 7 a.m. in the fast and middle lanes of westbound Shaw Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said. Dispatch logs describe a semi truck pulling a set of double trailers striking a large black pickup truck near the Maroa Avenue intersection. The crash initially was logged as a traffic collision with unknown injuries before CHP requested an ambulance to the scene; the extent of any injuries has not been confirmed.
Logs show the lanes were blocked as a traffic hazard immediately after the crash. Investigators noted that the driver of the black pickup was out of the vehicle and yelling at the truck driver, and that the truck driver may also have left his vehicle, though neither account has been confirmed beyond the initial dispatch notes. A tow company was called to clear the vehicles from the roadway.
The CHP has not released the identities of those involved or a cause for the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
We are hoping for the best for those involved as more details come in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, usually causing severe damage to the smaller vehicle's upper frame and cabin.
What typically causes large-truck collisions?
Common factors include driver fatigue, following too closely, lane changes in blind spots, mechanical failure, and sudden stops or slowdowns in traffic that a loaded truck cannot match.
How can drivers stay safe near large trucks?
Giving trucks extra following distance, staying out of their blind spots, and avoiding sudden lane changes near a truck's trailer can lower the chance of a serious collision.
Does driver fatigue play a role in truck crashes?
Yes. Long hours behind the wheel can slow a driver's reaction time, and fatigue is a recurring factor cited in investigations of commercial truck crashes.
