Fresno, CA (January 12, 2026) – A devastating multi-vehicle crash involving over a dozen vehicles claimed at least one life Saturday morning on southbound State Route 99 near the Cedar Ave on-ramp. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) began receiving reports of the massive collision around 9:17 a.m. on January 11, with early callers describing multiple crashes and thick fog reducing visibility to near zero.
Responding units found a chaotic scene involving between 15 to 20 vehicles, including a semi-truck and multiple passenger vehicles, some with major front-end damage. One person was confirmed dead at the scene, though the identity of the victim has not yet been released. Several others were reportedly injured, but the extent of their injuries remains unclear.
Emergency responders, including EMS and multiple towing companies, worked for hours to assist the injured, clear the wreckage, and manage traffic. A full freeway closure was implemented, and a SIG alert was issued to redirect vehicles away from the scene. CHP advised drivers to use alternate routes, including SR-41 to Central Ave.
Investigators suspect heavy fog may have played a critical role in triggering the chain-reaction crash. Witnesses reported a sudden loss of visibility moments before the initial impact. The freeway remained closed for an extended period, with updates confirming that cleanup and investigation efforts continued late into the night.
Our hearts go out to the family of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident, and we extend our hopes for healing to all others affected.
