Why Left-Turn Situations Can Be Risky for Motorcycles
Motorcycle crashes frequently occur during left-turn situations at busy roads or shopping center entrances. Drivers turning across traffic may have difficulty spotting motorcycles because they are smaller and can blend into surrounding vehicles or background scenery.
Motorcycles also approach intersections quickly, given how far away they appear. This visual effect can lead drivers to believe they have more time to complete a turn than they actually do. When a turn begins at the same time a motorcycle reaches the intersection, a collision can occur within seconds.
Busy commercial corridors can add more challenges. Multiple lanes, turning vehicles, and nearby parking lot entrances often create complex traffic patterns. Riders and drivers both benefit from slowing down at intersections and carefully scanning for approaching traffic from every direction.
