Why Speed Plays a Central Role in Intersection Crashes

Crashes at intersections come down to timing measured in fractions of a second. A driver who is going even a little faster than conditions call for has less time to react to a car pulling out, a light changing, or traffic slowing ahead. That narrow window is where many collisions start.

Speed does not just make a crash more likely, it changes what happens when one occurs. A faster-moving vehicle takes longer to stop and hits with more energy, which raises the odds of injury for everyone involved. Small increases in speed can mean a big difference in how hard a vehicle strikes another car or a fixed object.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. Intersections, where paths cross and speeds vary widely between vehicles, are a normal setting for these injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can drivers do to avoid crashes like this one?

Slowing down near intersections, scanning cross traffic before proceeding, and avoiding distractions such as phones can cut down on the split-second errors that lead to collisions.

What injuries commonly result from car accidents?

Common injuries include whiplash, broken bones, cuts from broken glass, and head or chest injuries from striking the interior of the vehicle. Severity depends on speed and the angle of impact.

What typically causes crashes at intersections?

Frequent causes include failing to yield, misjudging the speed of oncoming traffic, running a stop sign or signal, and distracted or impaired driving.

Does speed really change how bad a crash is?

Yes. Higher speed means more force at impact and less time to brake or steer away from danger, which tends to make injuries more severe even in otherwise similar crashes.
