FULLERTON, Orange County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes on northbound State Route 57 just south of Chapman Avenue on Saturday afternoon, October 31. At least one injury was reported.
The California Highway Patrol said the collision involved several vehicles, including a gray Toyota 4Runner, a black Nissan IS300 and a red minivan, after loose ladders were reported in the middle lanes of the freeway. Witnesses reportedly told the CHP that drivers swerved to avoid the ladders in the roadway, and a separate cluster of vehicles, described as a gray sedan, a black SUV and a red sedan, also collided nearby, blocking the middle lanes.
A caller reported at least one injury in the crash, though the extent of those injuries has not been released. CHP radio traffic indicated medical personnel were sent to the scene, and the agency's log shows the call was upgraded from a hazard report to a collision with injuries before being updated again as units responded.
Traffic backed up on the southbound side as drivers slowed to view the wreck, and video from a nearby camera reportedly showed the roadway blocked just north of the Orangethorpe Avenue interchange. The CHP closed out its incident log a short time later, and lanes were expected to reopen once the vehicles and debris were cleared.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It is not yet known whether speed, road debris, or another factor directly led to the collision.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up on the freeway?
Keeping a safe following distance and watching traffic several cars ahead gives drivers more time to react if vehicles suddenly slow or swerve around an obstacle.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Stay in your vehicle with seatbelts on if it's safe to do so, turn on hazard lights, and watch for approaching traffic that may not see the slowdown in time.
How does debris in the road, like the ladders reported here, contribute to crashes?
Unexpected objects in a travel lane force drivers to brake hard or swerve without warning, which can trigger chain-reaction collisions in nearby lanes.
Why does following distance matter so much on busy freeways?
A longer gap between vehicles gives drivers more space to stop or steer around a hazard, reducing the chance of rear-ending another car when traffic suddenly slows.
