Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped in traffic near a highway crash?
Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on unless you're in immediate danger, turn on your hazard lights, and watch your mirrors for vehicles approaching too fast from behind. Avoid looking out at the scene ahead.
How does fog or low visibility play into multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Reduced visibility cuts the time drivers have to see slowed or stopped traffic ahead, which is often how a single crash grows into several. Slowing down and increasing following distance in fog or haze gives drivers more time to react.
Why does following distance matter so much on highways?
A longer gap between vehicles gives a driver more time to brake or steer around trouble ahead. On higher-speed roads like Highway 109, even a few extra car lengths can be the difference between stopping safely and rear-ending the car in front.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Gallatin, TN
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, check yourself and any passengers for injuries before doing anything else, and call 911 even if the damage looks minor. Some injuries, especially to the neck, back, or head, don't show symptoms right away, so it's worth getting checked out by a medical provider the same day. Move to a safe spot off the roadway if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Exchange information with other drivers involved, and if law enforcement responds, get the report number and the names of the responding officers or troopers before you leave the scene. Take photos of the vehicles and surroundings if you're able. Afterward, follow up with your own doctor if anything still feels off, even days later.
