Cicero, NY (May 21, 2026) – A garbage truck and an SUV collided at the intersection of Route 31 and Legionnaire Drive in Cicero early on Thursday morning, leaving the front of the SUV severely crushed. Emergency units were called at 3:03 a.m. after an iPhone crash detection alert was triggered. Route 31 was closed to all traffic for approximately 30 minutes between Legionnaire Drive and a nearby post office.
All occupants were able to exit both vehicles on their own. Two people were evaluated at the scene, and one was taken to a hospital for further evaluation. No names were released in the initial report on the accident, but the collision remains under review, and more details will be made available as they come in.
We are glad everyone involved was able to get out safely and hope those hurt make a full recovery.
How iPhone Crash Detection Works and Why It Matters for Emergency Response
Apple’s crash detection feature, available on newer iPhones and Apple Watches, uses a combination of sensors, including accelerometers and barometers, to identify the sudden forces associated with a vehicle collision. When a severe crash is detected, and the user does not respond within a set window, the device automatically contacts emergency services and shares the user’s location. This can be especially valuable in situations where a driver or passenger is unconscious or otherwise unable to call for help.
Early-morning crashes on less-traveled roads are exactly the type of scenario where the feature has the most potential to save time. Response teams receiving an automated alert can be on the way within seconds of a crash, even before any bystander has had a chance to notice or report it.
