Genoa, IL (May 8, 2026) – One man was hospitalized following a crash involving an SUV and a semi-truck on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of IL Rte 72 and IL Rte 23 near Genoa.
Emergency units responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 p.m. on May 7 after reports of a two-vehicle collision. Investigators said a gray Ford Explorer was stopped at the intersection waiting to turn when a yellow semi-truck approached and failed to stop at a stop sign.
According to preliminary findings, the semi-trailer narrowly avoided a cement truck before striking the Ford Explorer on the driver’s side. The semi-truck then drove into a ditch and came to a stop.
Officials said the SUV’s occupants were evaluated at the scene and declined transport to a hospital. The semi-truck driver, identified as 71-year-old John Dare, was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for treatment. Authorities also reported that he was cited following the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Intersection Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Can Cause Serious Damage
Intersections between highways and rural routes are common crash locations involving large commercial vehicles. Semi-trucks require greater stopping distances than passenger vehicles, especially when approaching intersections or carrying heavy loads.
When a truck fails to stop or yield, its size and weight can lead to severe side-impact damage. Vehicles struck on the driver’s side may absorb significant force because there is less structural protection compared to front or rear impacts.
Investigators often review stop sign visibility, braking evidence, and vehicle movement after the collision. Final vehicle positions and roadway markings can help reconstruct how the crash unfolded and why the vehicles entered the intersection simultaneously.
