GRAND PRAIRIE, Dallas County, Texas, Oct. 9, 2026 — A pedestrian died on Wednesday night, October 7, after being struck by an SUV on I-30 near MacArthur Blvd in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Grand Prairie Police Department is investigating.
The crash happened around 7:50 p.m. on the entrance ramp to the TEXpress lanes of eastbound I-30. Investigators said the pedestrian had been riding in a vehicle that broke down on or near the ramp, then got out and began walking along it before an SUV struck them.
Grand Prairie Fire Department medics responded and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was not hurt and is reportedly cooperating with detectives.

What Keeps Pedestrians Safe on Highway Shoulders and Ramps
Interstates like I-30 are built for moving vehicles, not people on foot. There are no sidewalks, no crosswalks, and usually no shoulder wide enough for someone to stand clear of traffic, so a breakdown or a walk to find help can put a pedestrian in the path of cars moving at highway speed with little warning.
Engineers have found some fixes that help. Wider, well-lit shoulders give stranded drivers and passengers more room to get away from traffic. Rumble strips and reflective markers on ramps give approaching drivers more time to react. Call boxes, better cell coverage, and faster roadside-assistance response all cut down on the time anyone spends walking along live lanes in the first place.
Driver behavior still matters just as much as road design. Steady speeds through merge points, extra following distance on ramps, and quick use of hazard lights or reflective triangles when a vehicle stalls all reduce the odds that a breakdown turns into something worse.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 68,244 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Survival drops sharply as speed rises. A pedestrian struck at lower urban speeds has a much better chance of survival than one hit at highway speeds, where the force involved is far greater, and injuries tend to be more severe.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Most occur away from intersections, usually on roads without sidewalks or safe crossing points, including highway shoulders, ramps, and arterial roads where pedestrians and vehicles share space with little separation.
Are these crashes more common after dark?
Yes. A large share of pedestrian deaths happen at night, when visibility is lower, and drivers have less time to see and react to someone on or near the roadway.
What should a pedestrian do after being struck by a vehicle?
If possible, stay still and call 911. Avoid moving unless staying in place puts you in further danger, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some, like internal injuries or concussions, aren't obvious right away.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Grand Prairie, TX
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash in Grand Prairie should call 911 immediately and wait for police and medical responders. Even if someone feels unhurt, a medical check is worth getting, since adrenaline can mask pain from injuries that show up hours later.
If you're a driver whose vehicle breaks down on a highway, try to move as far from traffic as the road allows, turn on hazard lights, and stay inside the vehicle with a seatbelt fastened unless remaining inside poses greater risk. Calling for roadside assistance or police before stepping out can make a real difference in a situation like this.
Witnesses should stay at the scene if it's safe to do so and share what they saw with responding officers. Police reports and any available dashcam or traffic footage usually become central to understanding exactly how a crash like this unfolded.
