Gretna, NE (March 17, 2026) – A major multi-vehicle crash involving more than 20 vehicles shut down Interstate 80 westbound on Sunday, March 15, near Gretna. The pileup occurred near mile marker 421, close to Greenwood and the Gretna Outlets exit.
Emergency units responded to the scene, including EMS and Fire Rescue, where numerous vehicles were involved. Reports indicate that snow and low visibility contributed to hazardous driving conditions at the time of the crash.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed at Exit 432 as crews worked to manage the scene and clear the roadway. Drivers were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes due to significant delays.
The incident remains under investigation. We extend our thoughts to those affected and wish them a full recovery.
How Weather Conditions Can Lead to Multi-Vehicle Pileups
Severe weather, such as snow and fog, can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. When drivers cannot clearly see ahead, they may not have enough time to react to slowing or stopped traffic, increasing the risk of crashes.
On highways and near exits, vehicles often travel at higher speeds, which can make it harder to stop quickly. If one crash occurs, the following vehicles may not be able to avoid the scene, leading to chain-reaction collisions.
Large vehicles like semi-trucks require longer stopping distances, especially on slick roads. When conditions worsen, even small delays in braking can result in multiple vehicles becoming involved in a pileup.
