Shannon, MS (March 17, 2026) – A 62-year-old man from Shannon was killed on Monday, March 16, in a single-car crash at the intersection of North and Broad Streets. The wreck occurred around noon.
Officials identified the driver as William Thomas. Shannon Police Chief Tony Rogers said Thomas’s car struck a culvert, crossed Broad Street, flipped into trees, and landed in a creekbed just short of the railroad tracks. Preliminary reports indicate Thomas may have suffered a cardiac emergency, which contributed to the crash.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances of the incident.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Thomas.
Why Medical Emergencies Can Lead to Fatal Single-Vehicle Crashes
Sudden medical events, such as heart attacks or seizures, can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, often resulting in serious or fatal accidents. Even when the vehicle is traveling slowly, collisions with fixed objects like culverts, trees, or embankments can be deadly.
Investigators assess vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and available medical information to determine how a medical emergency contributed to the crash. Understanding these factors helps explain how otherwise routine driving can turn deadly.
