Frequently Asked Questions
Are motorcycle crashes more likely to happen at intersections?
Yes. A large share of motorcycle collisions occur at intersections, usually because another driver fails to see the rider or misjudges the motorcycle's speed while turning or crossing traffic.
Does road surface affect motorcycle safety?
Yes. Loose gravel, potholes, wet pavement and uneven lane markings affect motorcycles far more than cars, since a bike has less contact with the road and can lose traction more easily.
What gear helps reduce injury for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a crash, though they cannot prevent every injury.
What usually causes motorcycle accidents?
Common causes include other drivers failing to yield or see the motorcycle, speeding, impaired driving, and riders being thrown off the bike after a collision with a vehicle or a fixed object.
