Groveport, OH (January 6, 2026) – A deadly crash involving a motorcycle and a COTA transit bus occurred Monday afternoon in Groveport, leaving one person dead and another hospitalized, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision happened around 4:07 p.m. on January 5 along Rohr Rd near Gateway Court. Authorities reported that a 2020 Yamaha MT 09 motorcycle was traveling west on Rohr Rd when it struck the driver’s side of a COTA bus that was turning east onto the roadway from Gateway Court.

The impact caused the motorcycle to catch fire shortly after the crash. Despite a rapid emergency response, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The bus driver was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. One passenger on board the bus was uninjured.

Rohr Rd was temporarily closed as investigators and emergency crews worked to manage the scene, extinguish the fire, and begin an accident reconstruction. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the motorcyclist and our well wishes to the injured bus driver for a smooth recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Franklin County, OH

Motorcycle crashes often result in catastrophic outcomes due to the lack of protection compared to larger vehicles. Monday’s fatal collision in Groveport—where a motorcycle collided with a turning transit bus—demonstrates the vulnerability of riders in high-impact situations, especially when larger vehicles are involved.

Intersections and turning movements are a common factor in motorcycle accidents. A split-second misjudgment or obstructed view can lead to devastating consequences. In this case, the fire resulting from the crash further increased the severity, eliminating any opportunity for life-saving intervention.

In Franklin County and throughout Ohio, motorcycle safety remains a major concern. Riders are encouraged to wear proper protective gear, maintain high visibility, and ride defensively. At the same time, all drivers must stay alert for motorcycles—especially when making turns or entering roadways from driveways or side streets.

For families affected by fatal motorcycle crashes, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Alongside grief, loved ones are often left with unanswered questions, legal concerns, and emotional trauma. Seeking experienced support can provide much-needed clarity during such difficult times.
