Why Pedestrian Crashes Involving School Buses Can Be Deadly
School buses are large vehicles with wide blind spots, especially when turning. Pedestrians near the sides or front of the bus may not be visible to the driver until it is too late to stop.
Intersections with marked crosswalks can still be dangerous if drivers are distracted, moving quickly, or have limited visibility. Turning maneuvers often require extra attention because pedestrians may be crossing from multiple directions.
Safety features such as crossing arms, flashing lights, and clear signage help reduce risk, but pedestrians are still vulnerable due to the vehicle’s size and momentum. Even a slow-moving bus can cause serious or fatal injuries if contact occurs.
