Hardin, MT (January 20, 2026) – A tragic hit-and-run incident early Sunday morning claimed the life of a pedestrian along Highway 87 near mile marker 44, prompting an urgent investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred just before 3:00 a.m. on January 18 and was reported by a passing motorist who contacted 911. Upon arrival, troopers discovered a deceased pedestrian at the scene with no vehicle present. Investigators have since determined, based on evidence left behind, that the suspect vehicle is believed to be a 2019–2021 Volkswagen Jetta. The car likely has front-end damage, though its color is currently unknown.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, and it is unclear whether any witnesses were present at the time of the crash. The section of Hwy 87 where the collision occurred was temporarily closed as law enforcement documented the scene and began collecting evidence.
The Montana Highway Patrol is now asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver involved.
